For the first time since 2010, Sri Lanka went into an ODI without both of their middle-order stalwarts, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. Angelo Mathews will captain Sri Lanka in the final one-dayer after Jayawardene was rested for the dead rubber in Pallekele. Sri Lanka also rested their main spinner, Rangana Herath, and brought in Sachithra Senanayake instead.
A batsman generally seen as having had too many chances, Chamara Kapugedera, got yet another opportunity. India also persisted with someone yet to establish himself at the international level, the woefully out-of-form Rohit Sharma getting another game.
India resisted the urge to experiment. The one change they made was bringing in Ajinkya Rahane in place of Virender Sehwag, who had a glute injury. Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat in Pallekele where he expected the ball to move under lights.
India: 1 Ajinkya Rahane, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Manoj Tiwary, 7 Suresh Raina, 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ashok Dinda
Sri Lanka: 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Dinesh Chandimal (wk), 4 Lahiru Thirimanne, 5 Chamara Kapugedara, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt), 7 Jeevan Mendis, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Pradeep, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Sachithra Senanayake
